The FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League 2023 is slated to be held from May 30 to July 16, 2023. This will be the fifth iteration of the prestigious event, with the final round taking place at the College Park Center, Arlington, Texas, United States. Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, People’s Republic China, Croatia, Dominican Republic, Germany, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, Poland, Serbia, Republic of Korea, Thailand, Türkiye, and the United States are the sixteen nations which will be competing at the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League 2023.
Italy secured their first championship victory in 2022, winning over Brazil with an impressive 3-0 scoreline in the final match. Before Italy’s success, the United States had dominated the Volleyball Nations League (VNL), emerging as champions in the inaugural edition in 2018, 2019 and 2021. The VNL was introduced by the FIVB (International Volleyball Federation) in October 2017 and replaced the long-standing World Grand Prix that had been established since 1993. The United States holds the record for the most titles, having claimed three gold medals, while Brazil has secured three silver medals. Turkey achieved one silver and one bronze, while China has obtained two bronze medals. Serbia also earned one bronze medal in the competition.
Format of the competition
In the pool phase of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League 2023, 16 teams will compete in groups of eight teams. During the pool stage, each team will be competing in 12 games. The competition’s final knockout round will then feature eight teams. In the finals, the eight matches that make up the knockout phase, four quarterfinals, two semi-finals, and the bronze and gold medal matches, will be played by the seven best teams and the finals’ host nation.
The eighth-ranked team will play the first-ranked team in the quarterfinals, the seventh-ranked team will compete against the second-ranked team in the quarterfinals, the sixth-ranked team will play the third-ranked team in the quarterfinals, and the fifth-ranked team will play the fourth-ranked team in the quarterfinals. If the team finishes in the top 8 teams in the Final Standings following the Preliminary Phase, the host team is positioned first. If the team is not one of the top 8 teams in the Final Standings following the VNL Preliminary Phase, it is put in the right place.
