Three students facing charges after gun fired at Twin Falls middle school

Three students are facing multiple charges after a gun was discharged at a middle school in Twin Falls Thursday afternoon.

KMVT reports that the gun went off at Robert Steward Middle School. No injuries were reported.

The 14-year-old who discharged the weapon was in advisory class at the time the gun fired, hitting the table leg. KMVT says the teacher called the principal and the School Resource Officer (SRO). Police were then called.

The gun was given to the police and no ongoing threat to the rest of the student body was made after that.

Later that night, police say three students are being charged for unlawful possession of a firearm, the unlawful discharge of a firearm, and felony charges of altering the serial number of a firearm and possessing a firearm on school property.

The superitnendent's office released a statement on the incident:

"This is Dr. Wiley Dobbs Superintendent of Schools. I am calling to inform you of an incident at Robert Stuart Middle School. There was an accidental discharge of a weapon on campus however no one was hurt. The weapon was immediately turned over to administrators and the school staff has turned the investigation over to the local police."

"A student was taken into custody and under the guidance of the local police department we believe the situation is contained. Most students are off campus participating in Helping Hands Day, Police remain on campus and at this time there is no reason to believe any further threat exists."
